arabian horses
taz the daz asked:

i have a 4 year old arabian. we just finished our first year of showing and it was lots of fun. but i am really interested in what the judges are looking for in hunter pleasure. my trainer says my horse is and OK horse but probably wont make it to nationals. i think he’s got it in him. so mainly i want to know what makes the judges go WOW and Oh NO.
whats the sign of a good arabian hunter pleasure horse. like how much leg bend should they have and how should their head be carried

make sure your horse is not too spirted but will git into gaits easy. give it a bath a few days before and say good boy/girl and a nice pat. make sure your horse knows that your happy.

make sure hes well groomed and ur well groomed. wear proper clothing and tack. do a hunter braid for his mane and the french braid on the tail. thats about all for appearance

if ur doing hunter pleasure, judges look for slow collective gaits. almost like western pleasure, but not drastic. u want a lower head set than u would for jumping and u have to be consistent and controlled. u want to be on a long rein(but not too long) so that the horse looks like a pleasure to ride. hence “hunter pleasure”.

As opposed to hunter under saddle which is looking for those big warmbloods with long ground covering stride. they still want control and consistentcy, but higher head carriage and longer strides. this is for jumpers. they look for traits that a cross country horse would have to have. o yeah, shorter rein too =D

hope this helps!

they look for stance - like how they hold themselves
their confirmation (how square they are)
they look for the movements
not necessarily how their head is low they’d want a natural hold.

For an Arabian hunter pleasure horse you want one who is a very consistent mover. Meaning every time the judge looks at them they look the same. They should have a longer ground covering stride compared to the western pleasure or saddle seat horse. The rider should have contact with the mouth and the horse should be on the bit. They should look like they are well mannered, well trained and most importantly a pleasure to ride.

If your trainer is showing horses on a national level and is telling you your horse is not national caliber I’d advise you to get a second opinion IF it makes you feel better. BUT I’d also advise you to trust this professional and their opinion too.

Competitive Arabian hunter pleasure horses these days have changed a lot. Some judges go for the more classic hunter with a nice headset and slight knee bend. But most judges are pinning hunters that look like country horses with their heads dumped over. They’re super tight in the bridle and trot close to level.

the purebred that won the amateur class at nationals

top 10 in the same class

another top 10

here’s the link for the site

again, it all depends on the judge’s preference and how clean of a class you have.

ok so if your horse has toe weighted shoes on for hunter take them off it makes to much bend. put normal heavy shoes on that are weighted all the way around or just in he back of the heel. they mostly like the conformation that is stretchy but has some square to it. so your horse should lift in a square and the leg should come down with a long stretch that is slightly curved.
head set should be rounded his noes in as far as u can get it without hurting him. if you were to make a line going directly in the middle of his body his noes should be at that point in his chest.
to get your horse to do that Circincle him while lunging. while riding get a german marten gail and the rains. this will help him to put in his noes at that center point. or ride with double rains the one 4 curb will bring him to put his noes in and collect more. be very careful with the curb dont make it 2 tight. and if he has never been ridden with one lung him with a bridle on and put the rains under the stirrups of the saddle. let him get used to it for a week and then ride with it slowly make it shorter and shorter every day till he gets that upside down u in his neck.
wash him in the morning b4 the show as well as the day b4. you should b able to lick him and not have a single taste of salt. have him clipped 3days b4 a show by a PRO clipper or when ever your trainer clips the horses. put baby oil on his noes and around the eyes b4 the show and sand paper his feet as well as using steal wool then paint his feet black unless they r white. if he is a bay with black legs put black shoe polish on them so they look super black only stay within the black hairs. brush his tail with show sheen and b4 entering the show water and in between classes brush with water.
YOU need to be smiling with teeth or not. have to look like u no wht ur doing. talk to your horse while riding not like constant but so you and him stay calm and relaxed. if you see some1 in the ring that is close to u pass them or make a circle. spend your time in front of the judge dont do circles in front of him unless u have 2. and cut across the middle to get his attention he will b looking at you. do it once no more then that.
have the latest riding apparel clean it b4 the show as well as bridles and tack. clean the bit 2.

anything you have a question with just ask
and have fun its the most important thing of showing
i hope i helped
