arabian horses
silverwings asked:

It seems like every horse person I meet either loves or hates Arabian horses (I love them!) and I was wanting to know some opinions. If you like them, why? If you dislike them, why?

I love Arabian horses, quarter horses, welsh pony, Morgan horses, miniture horses and mustangs. I’m not too wild about walkers, warm bloods, thourogh breds.

I like the temperments of the breeds and they are the most beautiful that I’ve been around and worked with.

I love them - I think they’re so majestic and beautiful. My friend on the other hand hates them - she says their faces are all smashed up xD.

Love them as they are very lively all the time. Not like dead donkeys.

i dont know why people pick on arab horses so much, every breed is different. dont have a fave breed, but my filly is 1/2 arab and i love her.

I don’t like them nor to do I love them.

I’ve ridden a few very nice Arabians and I’ve also ridden some not so nice Arabians. I personally wouldn’t want to own one, they aren’t my favorite, but I’d be more than happy to ride one (I’ll ride anyhorse, actually)

The Arabs I don’t like are the ones you see in the pictures, with the really really reallyyyy dish shaped heads (no offence, I think its ugly.) and the ones that are really high-strung.
But I like the Arabs were you can tell they are Arabian but they aren’t ugly.

Love em! THey will only do anything if they trust you, they have excellent conformation, improve other breeds, have extreme versatility, and build outstanding bonds. I can’t think of anything bad about them. A lot of people in the hunterjumper world hate arabs because they think they are crazy and ugly. I say whatever to that!

I have only one personal experience with an Arab. My with took one on loan and it was a total nut, it was scared of it’s own shadow!!!

Hate them!

I think that they are very beautiful, but they are as overrated as the Thoroughbred. I’ve never ridden one, but as with any breed some are high strung and others are bombproof. I don’t really love or hate them. To me, they’re just a breed. Like Thoroughbreds, Hanoverians, Appaloosas, Shetlands, Welshes,…just a breed.

I love all horses. I don’t understand why people don’t like a specific breed cuz all horses are different in personalities. It doesn’t depend on the breed or colour, it depends on the actual horse!
Just like the famous saying goes; You can’t judge a book by its cover.
As for this topic; You can’t judge a horse by its breed.

I think hate is a strong word but I dislike them. I find them to be spooky and unpredictable.

I helped at an endurance race once, and I was very impressed by their endurance. I couldn’t believe how they could keep going and going and going. I know they are bred for that but it’s still amazing to see it in action.

That being said, even after 32 miles, those horses were STILL spooking at the water tank that they had already gone by twice. No thanks.

EDIT: Thanks for the thumbs down for voicing my opinion, whoever did that. Just because an opinion is different from yours doesn’t mean it’s bad or wrong.

they are gorgoues and easy to ride(mares at least)

I used to hate them because they can be nutty sometimes, but I’ve been working on an Egyptian Arabian farm halter breaking, saddle breaking, and retraining 6 of their horses, and I’ve come to love arabs. They’re really smart, and once they’re desensitized, really great to work with.

equinebabe98 wrote on October 10th, 2008 12:21 pm :

Dislike like them because they are really highly strung and i have yet to come across one which isnt a complte nightmare on the roads (though there must be some out there!)
But saying that they do tend to work beautifully in the school. But definatly not a breed to suit me!

i dont hate them, but they arent my favorite. i really like warmbloods, thouroughbreds, hanoverians, and sport horses. : )

Em+Tor wrote on October 14th, 2008 9:41 pm :

I don’t care what breed, how they look, or how they’re trained. It’s the personality of the horse that gets me! :) So, I do like Arabians just as much as any other breed… Breed doesn’t matter to me!

galloppal wrote on October 18th, 2008 5:10 am :

I love Arabians. They form very close bonds with humans, unlike any other breed I’ve owned or been around. They are very intelligent which makes them more challenging, but I don’t mind the challenge since you end up with such an amazing partnership when you work with and ride them.
They have bones and hooves of superior density and quality, and their shorter backs render them stronger and more versatile than other breeds. They are capable of just about any task you put before them, and they perform with far fewer injuries and far more stamina than other breeds.
That said, I also like other breeds for their special qualities…so for me, if it’s a horse, I’ll find something about it to love.

Mel wrote on October 18th, 2008 11:26 am :

A lot of people dont like Arabs because they are spooky, but people need to realize that these horses were bred for hundreds of years to be alert to trouble approaching from miles away. The Arab people developed this sensitivity as an alarm system and their lives depended upon this sensitivity..

I used to not like Arans but I was put in a situation where I had to work with them and really learned to enjoy their intelligence and sensitivity…I found them highly trainable and fun to work with..

I personally dislike Arabians

It’s not because they are high strung or spooky, Id much rather have a horse like that then a horse that is too lazy to walk.

I just really dislike their body figure. I dont like the dished face and their tails are a bit too highly perched. But I do like their fine bone structure.
What really gets me the most is the dished face. I absolutetly love horses with a simple headshape. Connemaras are a great example. Their headstructure makes them look very calm and elegant. (The way the muzzle is put and how the cheek bones meet the muzzle…you know what i mean?)
I dont like horses that always flare their noses so that it makes them look like they’re either angry or too nervous. In some pictures, you can see that Arabian’s noses are so flared, which kind of destroys the elegance to me.

My favorite horse breeds (based on looks) are -
Andalusians
Gypsy Vanners
Connemaras
Thoroughbreds (When they arent flaring their noses)

My favorite breeds based on riding are-
Quarter horses
Connemaras
Appendix QH’s (TB/QH mix)
Sometimes Thoroughbreds
Arabians (I used to ride one, he was very enjoyable to ride)

It would not be good in a compition.

ibbibud wrote on October 28th, 2008 8:13 pm :

I like them. I’ve had Arabians for 17 years, got into them when I found they were a lot easier for me to ride than my Quarter Horses after a back injury. I have a herd of purebreds and crosses and they are all delightful. I have also known some awful ones. BUT..I could say the same of ANY breed…they all have good animals and bad. A good horse is just that, does not matter what the breed is.

They are soooooo affectionate

Anna Rosa wrote on October 31st, 2008 5:50 am :

I love them.
I have an Egyptian Arabian, who has the classic Arabian features. Some people hate them because they are spooky, high-strung, and sometimes unpredictable.

I have found that once an Arab trusts you, they will do anything for you. I’ve had my mare for 6 years and she is absolutely fearless.

Most people just don’t take the time.

Barefoottrimmer wrote on October 31st, 2008 4:44 pm :

Arabians are wonderful. They are very people oriented and great to have around. Most of those seen that are “out of control”, that is a human induced problem, not a breed problem. It is unfortunate they get such a bad reputation. They have a wonderful spirit and are so intelligent and easy to train. I find them very willing to please and ride so comfortably with their shorter backs. The have beautiful carriage. Wonderful horses.

tbobsession wrote on November 2nd, 2008 6:35 pm :

in my opinion, the only good thing about ‘em is they’re smart.

i just can’t stand the way everyone’s so hyped up about them… not to mention, they look rediculous. especially the halter horses.

i like my bigger boned TBs and WBs.

ZiggyBadger wrote on November 5th, 2008 11:36 am :

For me it all depends on the individual.

I’ve met Arabs that i really disliked and Arabians I’ve loved. I do find the breed to be more “hot” and flighty compared to some, but for me that’s fine. I think they are a beautiful breed and most have great endurance.

My first trail horse was an Arabian mare and we could ride all day, eight hours strait. I loved her. I would’ve never put a child on her, but she was wonderful for me.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! I love how they stand so proud.. like my QH ( which I love to death ) when it stands in a show the head is down and low. the tail is down/low and they do that because it is a QH. But arabs raise their head. arch their necks. lift their tails so gracfully. they seem so much happier. don’t get me wrong.. I wouldn’t give my QH up for the world but.. there is my two cents on arabians
