Start with the Quarter horse. Arabians and Thoroughbreds are hotblooded horses, which have tougher temperments. Ask any experienced horse owner and they will tell you that Quarters are good starter horses.

Well I own an 1/2 Arabian and 1/2 QH she’s just awesome, I’ve owner a couple pure QH and didn’t really LOVE the temperment, and owned a Pure Arabian, Not one complaint from her. Depends on what you plan on doing with the horse, trail riding, showing, english, westen, jumping? I just trail ride and always did. I used to heard stay away from the arb they are HOT, WILD, gee I fell in love with there loving, friendly, out going temperament, trained so easily and just love them. The TB is a wonderful horse but I didn’t need all the height. Just look at lots, don’t judge the book by the cover:)

I would really recomend a quarter horse. Arabians are really smart, but are prone to having attitude problems.
Also, if this is your first horse get one that is already trained for the basics–riding, long-lining, etc. When I got my first horse I had been riding for quite a while, and so I thought that I could handle a horse the was “mostly broke” and energetic and stubborn.

One concussion and amnesia later, I found out i was wrong.

by the way, don’t start with a pony or a mare either. You should try to find a nice middle aged gelding that is patient and doesn’t spook. And if you know someone who is good with horses, ask them to help you check the horse before you buy it.

There are good horses and bad horses of any breed. The most important thing is that you find a horse that is compatible to your ability level and that you can find good chemistry to form a good working relationship with.

It depends on what you want…Do you want a horse that will do anything, super easy to ride, etc, or do you want a horse that would be a little more of a challenge (not a lot, but a little), one that’s a little hotter, has more spirit, etc? I personally love hot blooded horses and I’m not a fan of horses like the Quarter Horse (I just like hot blooded horses better) but it really depends on what you want to use it for and what type you want:)
If you ride western or want to do a western sport like barrel racing, I would go with the Quarter Horse. If you ride English (of course, each breed can do both types of riding, but they all have their main type) or you do show jumping, eventing, etc, then I would get an Arabian.
It’s completely up to you and what type of horse you want:)
Good luck with buying a new horse!:)

PS — ALWAYS have a vet check BEFORE you buy a horse, ride the horse before you buy it, and have someone who is more experienced than you that you trust with you and get their advice before you purchase a horse…This can save you thousands of dollars:)

Arabian horses are the most beautifull, smart, strong, and expressive … Stallions are a bit too tough to handle for a starter, so get a mare and I would even advice more on an older mare (like above 9 years). I am sure you will be hooked on arabians once you get a nice arabian mare. Good luck.
